Recap: 2018 Scholarship Awards Fundraising Fiesta

On March 3, 2018 our chapter hosted our first scholarship awards and fundraising fiesta!
We played loteria (Mexican bingo), held a fundraising raffle with gifts from Por Vida and
passes to the Latino Film Festival, ate delicious food from Super Cocina, Telemundo and
NBC San Diego newsroom tour, networked with other journalist, and received a free headshot!
The event was highlighted by Hugo Balta, senior director of Hispanic initiatives for ESPN,
who awarded two $1,000 scholarships via the Hortencia Zavala Scholarship
which Hugo started in is grandmother’s name.

Brenda Gregorio-Nieto, from SDSU and
Cristal Miranda, student at San Diego City College.
were the winners of the 2018 Hortencia Zavala Scholarships.
Our chapter, because of your donations and support, was able to award a
$500 scholarship to Jasmine Bermudez. She will be graduating from
San Diego State University this semester and continuing her education in law school.

We also want to congratulate Carlos Rico,
who took home our 2018 member of the year award on Saturday!

Gracias to the staff at Telemundo 20 and NBC 7 San Diego
for their hospitality and hosting our event.

Y un fuerte aplauso to our scholarship and events committee
Nancy Moya, Marissa Cabrera, Andrea Lopez-Villafana,
Diana Rodriguez, Adriana Heldiz, and Suzy Garcia,
who organized the event and scholarship program.
